LIG Nex1 announced that it is promoting K-Defense’s excellent technology to the navies of 26 countries participating in RIMPAC, while creating a bridgehead to pioneer new overseas markets.

The 2022 Rim of the Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC), the world’s largest multinational joint maritime exercise led by the U.S. Navy, began in 1971 and is held every other year, and this year is the 28th. RIMPAC is conducted under the auspices of the U.S. Navy to protect maritime transportation routes, jointly respond to threats, and promote joint force interoperability among Pacific coastal countries.

RIMPAC is a forum for friendship between navies of each country and a conduit for targeting the U.S. market, the world’s largest defense industry market. LIG Nex1 introduced ‘Bigung’ at the RIMPAC training site held on the 4th. The Republic of Korea Navy observed the training as an observer in 1988, and is participating for the 17th time since participating for the first time in 1990. This year, the largest force ever participated.

‘Bigung’ is a 2.75-inch guided rocket that was developed in 2016 under the supervision of the Agency for Defense Development and with the participation of LIG Nex1 to respond to moving targets at sea. ‘Bigung’ has a small diameter of about 7cm and is equipped with a guidance control device, etc., and is capable of responding to multiple targets simultaneously through a ‘fire-and-forget’ method.

It has excellent mobility by applying a vehicle-mounted method, and the vehicle itself is equipped with both target detection and launch control devices, so it can perform independent operations.

The Navy is operating the ‘Bigung’ in the Marine Corps to replace the existing aging coastal artillery. LIG Nex1 attracted great attention by exhibiting the Bigung, which can be applied to ships such as unmanned surface vehicle platforms, to the navies of each country participating in this RIMPAC exercise.

In October 2019, ‘Bigung’ was the first guided weapon developed by Korea to achieve excellent results in all requirements of multiple verification processes, including flight and shooting tests and on-site inspections, conducted under the observation of the U.S. Department of Defense evaluation team in the U.S. FCT (Foreign Comparative Test) program. and has proven its performance. FCT is a U.S. Department of Defense program that tests and evaluates superior equipment and technologies from allied countries that are not produced in the United States. According to LIG Nex1, the 2.75-inch guided rocket ‘Bigung’ is the first Korean guided weapon to be subject to FCT evaluation.

A LIG Nex1 official said, “As we have been working hard to secure cutting-edge technology and strengthen global marketing by interacting with global defense companies in North America, such as by opening a US office in 2009, the 2.75-inch guided rocket ‘Bigung’ has entered the US defense market, contributing to the Korea-US alliance. “We plan to do our best to become a priming water that contributes to strengthening,” he said.
