Kakao Mobility is expanding the next-generation intelligent transportation system (C-ITS) service area provided by Kakao Navi to Ulsan Metropolitan City and Gwangju Metropolitan City. Among navigation services, the C-ITS application area was first expanded to four major metropolitan cities, and the goal is to continue to expand the application area in the future to help Kakao Navi users drive safely and comfortably.

Next-generation intelligent transportation systems (Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems, hereinafter referred to as C-ITS) are systems that provide real-time information on surrounding traffic conditions and accident risks to drivers while driving, such as the remaining time for vehicle and pedestrian signals. By applying C-ITS data to navigation, drivers can check the color of traffic lights and remaining time in real time. Recognizing traffic signals ahead in advance not only prevents traffic accidents and law violations, but also helps drivers drive defensively.

Kakao Mobility has signed business agreements with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and each local government and has been working to contribute to the spread of C-ITS public data use. Following the application of C-ITS data from Seoul and Daegu Metropolitan City to Kakao Navi last March, the service provision area was expanded to Gwangju Metropolitan City last month and Ulsan Metropolitan City this month through close consultation with local governments. A business agreement was also signed with the Road Traffic Authority to further expand the basis for using real-time traffic signal information in the future.

In particular, considering the diverse navigation environments of users, C-ITS service has been provided on an automotive infotainment platform for the first time in the industry. You can use the C-ITS service by entering the ‘Road guidance settings menu’ under ‘More’ in the Android, iOS, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay Kakao Navi apps and activating ‘Real-time traffic signal guidance’.

User response to the service was also high, and in the past month (August 15 to September 15), the proportion of C-ITS service users among Kakao Navi app users has more than tripled since immediately after launch.

Kakao Mobility plans to continue to improve service quality through continuous driving tests while gradually expanding the service area.

Kakao Mobility CEO Ryu Geung-seon said, “The number of users has been steadily increasing since the launch of the service in March, so we have expanded the service area and delivery channels to satisfy customers.” He added, “Currently, we are providing C-ITS service in the most regions through the most diverse channels. “We are providing this service, and we will continue to strive to provide a differentiated service experience that helps Kakao Navi users move smartly.”
