Kakao’s impact commerce ‘Kakao Makers’ announced that it had conducted an ‘upcycling project’ and donated 20,000 pairs of upcycling socks for underprivileged children to the Green Umbrella Children’s Foundation.

The upcycling project is a new type of eco-friendly activity that regenerates used items into new products and uses them for good purposes. Beyond recycling discarded resources, you can protect the environment and donate at the same time by making products with new uses through processes such as adding new designs.

This project recruited participants last February and continued for about 8 months, including collecting, sorting, spinning, and producing t-shirts. A total of 2,000 users participated and donated 8,600 used T-shirts. Kakao Makers made a total of 24,000 pairs of upcycling socks by turning them into yarn (the thread that makes fabric). Of these, 20,000 pairs will be donated to the Green Umbrella Children’s Foundation and distributed to 116 children’s organizations across the country. The remaining 4,000 pairs will go back to project participants who donated the t-shirts.

The upcycling social enterprise ‘Wushisan’ participated in the process of selecting and sorting used T-shirts, providing new jobs for six people with developmental disabilities. The recycled cotton yarn used in the socks was jointly developed based on a business agreement with Taekwang Industrial, a textile and petrochemical company.

Jeon Seong-chan, Kakao Makers creator team leader, said, “We were able to help the environment and society through the participation and warm interest of many users.” He added, “We will continue to introduce various activities that will bring positive changes to the environment and society in general.” .

Meanwhile, Kakao Makers is currently conducting the second phase of an upcycling project to donate cardigans made from old sweaters to poor seniors. In November, we plan to recruit participants for the third period under the name ‘Saega Birch’.
