Nexon Co., Ltd. announced that it successfully completed the ‘2022 Nexon-GSOK Paper Contest’ co-hosted with the Korea Game Policy Autonomous Organization (GSOK).

This contest was held for the first time this year to develop and expand academic fields related to the gaming industry. The theme of the contest was ‘The impact of Nexon games on domestic society, economy, and culture’, and a total of 18 papers were submitted from June 9 to September 18. Among these, three award-winning works were selected after evaluation by expert judges in each field: the Grand Prize (1 film, 3 million won), the Excellence Prize (1 film, 2 million won), and the Encouragement Prize (1 film, 1 million won).

The grand prize went to the team of Seong-Hoon Bae, Seong-Geun Cho, and Jun-Hee Bae from Kyungpook National University, who submitted a paper on the topic ‘How does the combination of mode and IP lead to user participation?: Focusing on basic awareness and experiential creation desires.’ This paper received good reviews by analyzing the impact of using existing IP in mod creation games on user participation through the case of Maple Story World.

The Excellence Award was given to ‘The impact of e-sports on online brand awareness of professional sports clubs and the number of spectators at home games: Focusing on the FIFA Online eK League and K-League’ written by the team of Su-hyeon Lee and Yong-un Kim of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. This paper studied the impact of a professional sports club’s participation in e-sports on the sports club’s online brand awareness, audience, and sales.

The Encouragement Award was awarded to Kangwon National University’s team of Jeon Seong-eun and Jeong Se-wook’s ‘Emergence of Nexon Creative City, Creative City Emerging within the Digital Game Space: Focusing on Analysis of Nexon Maple Story’. They used Maple Story to analyze the sense of place in modern cities and the legitimacy of games as a third place to prepare for the loss of social capital.

Nexon presented its research results and held an awards ceremony at the Korea Game Law and Policy Society-GSOK joint seminar held at BEXCO in Busan during G-Star on the 18th.

A Nexon official said, “There were many novel research topics from various perspectives in the contest that Nexon and GSOK hosted for the first time this year,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to ensure that in-depth research is conducted in the gaming field.”
