Kim Jun-gu, CEO of Naver Webtoon, received a presidential commendation in the overseas expansion category at the ‘2021 Korea Content Awards’ .

Hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and organized by the Korea Creative Content Agency, the ‘Korea Content Awards’ annually awards workers and works that have contributed to the development of the Korean content industry . The overseas expansion category is awarded to those who have made notable contributions to the spread of the Korean Wave and the enhancement of its status through the overseas expansion of content .

After introducing the comics service to Naver in 2004, Kim Jun-gu, CEO of Naver Webtoon, created a domestic creator ecosystem with a new format and name called ‘Webtoon ‘ . Since 2014, we have established a global service in 10 languages, including English , Japanese , Thai , and French, allowing domestic artists to showcase their works around the world . Through this, webtoons established a leading position in overseas markets as Korea’s representative content and contributed to promoting the value and competitiveness of K-webtoons in the global entertainment market .

The reason why webtoons were able to leap forward as representative K-content in a short period of time is the PPS (Page Profit Share) program, a creator profit model introduced by Naver Webtoon for the first time in the industry . The PPS program is a business model that combines webtoons with the profits that platforms can generate, such as advertising , paid content , and IP business , in addition to existing manuscript fees, so that creators can focus on their creative activities based on stable profits . The total size of Naver Webtoon’s PPS program amounted to approximately 1.07 trillion won over the past 12 months .

Kim Jun-gu, CEO of Naver Webtoon, said, “The current Naver Webtoon is the result of great writers and readers who seek out their works,” adding, “Webtoon is further solidifying its position as a pillar of the Korean content industry that is recognized globally like music and drama. ” “I will do my best to contribute to this,” he said in his acceptance speech .
