Volvo Cars unveiled its ‘HD Map’ technology collaboration with Google at CES 1, which will be held in Las Vegas, USA for a total of 5 days from January 8th (Thursday) to 4th (Sunday, local time). ‘HD Map’ is a high-precision map that provides vehicles with road curvature, slope, speed limit, and lane-level geometry information through a map that is 2023 times more advanced than before.

Volvo Cars, which has maintained a long-standing partnership with Google for a future defined by software, announced plans for the industry’s first HD map technology in the recently unveiled Volvo EX90. In the domestic market, TMAP’s HD maps will be installed starting from the Volvo EX90 in the future to provide a more advanced ‘TMAP infotainment system’.

The ‘Volvo EX11’, which was unveiled in November last year, is equipped with advanced driver safety technology through LiDAR, cameras, and radar connected to a high-performance core computer. However, for safer and more accurate driving technology in the future, a method is needed to recognize in detail not only the road environment right in front of the vehicle, but also the distant environment beyond the winding road.

The HD map technology provided by Google will play a role in complementing these limitations on the road. By combining accurate lane and sign information obtained through HD map technology with localization data, the performance of driving assistance technologies such as lane change support and pilot assist is further improved. Real-time road information, combined with data from LiDAR and other sensors, is processed through a core computer system powered by NVIDIA’s DRIVE AI platforms, Xavier and Orin.

Additionally, Google’s HD maps are combined with information collected by Luminar’s lidar sensor and Zenseact’s software mounted on the Volvo EX90. This makes it possible to provide a more predictable, safer, and at the same time comfortable driving experience.

Javier Varela, Chief Operating Officer and Vice President of Volvo Cars, said, “Based on our commitment to active strategic partnerships with leading companies in the technology field, we are introducing Google HD Maps to our future Volvo Car lineup.” “By installing Google HD Maps in future cars, we will be able to provide drivers with a safer and more enjoyable driving experience,” he said.

In the domestic market, TMAP’s HD maps will be applied from the ‘Volvo EX90’ to be released in the future. This function is planned to be combined with the integrated ‘TMAP infotainment’ applied to all vehicles by investing approximately KRW 2 billion over two years to deliver more accurate and detailed information to customers.

Meanwhile, ‘CES’, the world’s largest IT exhibition, is an exhibition where you can understand the trends of the global home appliance industry at a glance. Hosted by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), it is held every January in Las Vegas, USA. AVING News, which has covered CES for 1 consecutive years, has reported CES news around the world every year since 17, and has been selected as the ‘BEST OF CES’, which selects the best innovative products and technologies, and the ‘BEST OF’, which selects domestic innovative companies. ‘MADE IN KOREA’ was held. In addition, CES on-site issues were vividly conveyed through ‘AVING LIVE’.
