It has been reported that Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platform (hereinafter referred to as Meta), will visit Korea at the end of this month. During this visit to Korea, he is expected to meet with key figures in domestic politics and business and discuss ways to supply and demand semiconductors to implement advanced AI services.

According to the industry on the 22nd, Zuckerberg plans to visit Korea next week and meet with Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong and President Yoon Seok-yeol. Previously, Zuckerberg visited Korea in 2013 and 2014 and met with Chairman Lee (then Vice Chairman), and ‘AI cooperation’ was pointed out as the main task behind this visit to Korea, which took place after 10 years.

Recently, Zuckerberg expressed his will to develop AGI in an interview, saying, “In order to create the products that Meta wants to make, we must aim for artificial general intelligence (AGI).” AGI is an AI that can learn all situations based on intelligence greater than that of humans, and to implement this, Meta plans to introduce the industry’s highest level AI model through the large language model (LLM) ‘Rama 3’ currently under development. .

Given that AGI requires advanced semiconductor technology, it is expected that CEO Zuckerberg will meet with Chairman Lee Jae-yong during his visit to Korea to discuss ways to cooperate. Samsung Electronics also recently established the ‘AGI Computing Lab’ organization in Silicon Valley, USA, and began developing AGI-specific semiconductors.

It is known that Zuckerberg is considering developing his own dedicated semiconductor as the supply and demand of chips is not smooth due to his virtual monopoly on the AI semiconductor market. Samsung Electronics, which has its own production capabilities for AI semiconductors and high-bandwidth memory (HBM), is one of the companies that can fully cooperate with Meta in product design and development as well as mass production.

The long-standing relationship between Chairman Lee and Zuckerberg, who is also an alumnus of Harvard University, is one of the reasons for predicting the possibility of a meeting between the two. During his visit to Korea for two days and one night in June 2013, Zuckerberg met with Chairman Lee after a courtesy visit to former President Park Geun-hye, and in October 2014, he visited Samsung Electronics’ Seocho headquarters and reunited with Chairman Lee.

Chairman Lee met Zuckerberg on a business trip to the U.S. during the Lunar New Year holiday in the summer of 2015 and 2016 to discuss ways to collaborate on virtual reality (VR) technology, and at Samsung Electronics’ new smartphone launch event in 2016, Zuckerberg personally appeared on stage. I also did it. At the time, Zuckerberg said, “Last summer, I took a walk with Jay Lee (Chairman Lee’s English name) and thought about how we could enable as many people as possible to experience VR.”

Meanwhile, it is known that Zuckerberg also requested a meeting with President Yoon through the Presidential Office. An official from the Presidential Office said, “We have received a request for a meeting from Meta, and we are considering it positively.” Furthermore, the industry is predicting the possibility that Zuckerberg will pursue cooperation with a number of domestic semiconductor companies and companies with generative AI technology.
