Kakao Enterprise (CEO Baek Sang-yeop) won the honor of taking first place in a global top-tier technology competition in the field of artificial intelligence facial recognition. Kakao Enterprises, a domestic company, won first place in a global computer vision technology competition where famous AI companies leading facial recognition technology around the world, including those in the United States and China, competed, drawing attention from the global AI industry.

Kakao Enterprise ranked first in the world in the 1:1 verification ‘kiosk’ category of the ‘Face Recognition Technology Competition (FRVT)’ hosted by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a leader in technology standards around the world. occupied. FRVT, a global top-tier competition in the field of facial recognition, is a competition that measures the performance of automatic facial recognition algorithms used in the civil, judicial, and national security fields, such as immigration screening and passport piracy detection through facial information comparison.

In particular, the kiosk sector, which took first place, is a more difficult field than other sectors as it deals with images where the face is facing downward and is prone to distortion and loss. This achievement by Kakao Enterprise in a sector that requires advanced AI facial recognition technology is a very valuable result that is noteworthy in the global AI industry.

In the ‘immigration screening (border)’ category, which placed second, it showed only a 0.0001 difference from the leading company, and was ranked 4th in the ‘VISA border’ category and 4th in the ‘mugshot’ category in four categories. By placing in the top 5, they proved their skills at the top level.

Just as the development of domestic semiconductor technology has led to the growth of various industries such as mobile, TV, and display, securing independent AI technology will enhance national technological competitiveness in various fields and help Korea secure leadership in the digital industry in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. It is expected to contribute greatly.

Kakao Enterprise’s technology used in this FRVT 1:1 verification is actually applied to ‘Walk-through’, a facial recognition-based access system at Kakao Enterprise’s headquarters. Based on these results, Kakao Enterprise plans to further enhance the facial recognition model to increase accuracy compared to the existing one, and sequentially provide services such as smart city, intelligent CCTV, and intelligent control based on this.

Baek Sang-yeop, CEO of Kakao Enterprise, said, “This achievement is a very meaningful result that not only publicizes Kakao’s technological prowess, but also raises national technological competitiveness in the field of AI source technology to the next level.” He added, “As Korea’s leading IT platform company, Kakao Enterprise is a leader in facial recognition technology. In addition, we plan to increase technological leadership in various AI fields such as voice recognition, conversation, natural language processing, search, recommendation, prediction, and optimization, and connect this to services in various industries to contribute to enhancing national industrial competitiveness.”
