LIG Nex1 signed a contract with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration for the ‘Light Torpedo-II System Development Project’ worth 154.9 billion won and announced that it will develop a new light torpedo (Light Torpedo-II).
The development of the light torpedo-II system is a project to improve the detection and attack capabilities of currently used light torpedoes (Blue Shark) that are mounted on surface ships and attack enemy submarines (boats). It not only has the ability to respond to evolving enemy decoys, but also has the ability to attack quickly and accurately from a distance, allowing it to strike targets with precision.
This project is one of the projects that the DAPA adjusted from supervised by the Agency for Defense Development to company-led research and development as part of the ‘defense research and development system reorganization.’ The National Research Institute provides technical support, including transferring the technology needed for development to LIG Nex1 and providing advice necessary for technical decision-making. The DAPA also plans to promote the project in close cooperation with related organizations such as ADD and Soyogun.
LIG Nex1 plans to actively reflect the latest technology trends based on stealth, such as developing a new acoustic detection sensor to improve the detection and attack capabilities of light torpedo-II against enemy submarines. It is expected that this will enable effective operations and greatly increase the survivability of friendly ships.
Kim Ji-chan, CEO of LIG Nex1, said, “In order for Light Torpedo-II to contribute to the implementation of the Navy’s Smart Navy and play a role in protecting the future of Korea’s seas, the 4th Industrial Revolution technology trend is being developed through close cooperation with related organizations and partner companies.” “We will do our best to develop luxury weapons that reflect this.”
