Naver Corporation announced that it has become the first domestic Internet platform company to join ‘RE100’, a global eco-friendly initiative to achieve carbon neutrality.
RE100 is an international initiative with the goal of covering the entire amount of electricity used by companies with renewable energy such as wind and solar power.
This RE100 membership further strengthens Naver’s determination to objectively recognize the excellence of its environmental management system through credible initiatives, following the fact that Naver has already established its own environmental management policy by announcing the ‘2040 Carbon Negative’ strategy in 2020. It is meaningful in that it has been solidified.
Naver plans to implement the ‘2040 Carbon Negative Roadmap’ established in 2021 to achieve RE100. More than 99% of Naver’s greenhouse gas emissions come from power use at IDC and office buildings.
Accordingly, 60% of the electricity used in IDC and office buildings will be replaced with renewable energy by 2030, and 100% by 2040. To this end, we plan to apply various action plans, such as expansion of renewable energy self-generation facilities at the office building and IDC and introduction of energy reduction technology, along with plans to expand renewable energy procurement such as PPA.
In addition to RE100, Naver is seeking to join various initiatives in the environmental field, which is the core of ESG. At the end of July last year, it also participated in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), which is the largest in the world with over 13,000 companies from 91 countries participating and is considered to have the highest reliability among ESG evaluation indices around the world. In addition, it is the first domestic Internet company to voluntarily manage Scope 3 and even perform third-party verification to improve accuracy.
Lim Dong-ah, Naver Environment responsible leader, said, “We are reducing our environmental impact by establishing a reduction plan including Scope 3 emissions, while also seeking to join major global eco-friendly initiatives such as EV100,” adding, “We are a domestic company with a level comparable to that of global companies in the field of environmental management.” “We will establish ourselves as a representative IT company.”
