Kakao Entertainment announced on the 6th that three Kakao Community companies, including Neptune and Colorverse, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to expand the Metaverse business.
With this MOU, we will seek various ways to cooperate by linking and utilizing the open 3D metaverse platform ‘Colorverse’ and Kakao Entertainment’s webtoons, web novels, and K-pop related intellectual property rights (IPs).
Colorverse is an open metaverse platform developed and serviced by Neptune and Colorverse. Colorverse, which was unveiled at Kakao Media Day last June, is being produced using streaming technology that can be freely used anywhere without restrictions on the web or app environment.
Previously, Colorverse started the official service of the 3D metaverse ‘Puppy Red’ and distributed it through the Google Play Store and Apple App Store on the 30th of last month. Puppy Red is the origin of ‘K-Metaverse’, which was so popular that it had a total of more than 3 million members in Korea alone since its launch in 2003. The service was officially terminated in August 2016 after 13 years of long-term operation, and users It also left them with great regret.
Puppy Red, a mobile 3D metaverse that reinterprets this with a modern sensibility, restores the existing chat system, mini park decoration, avatar and pet training, baby care, role play, etc. with trends added, and various new items and functions. It is characterized by the implementation of a metaverse optimized for mobile by applying differentiated content.
Kakao Entertainment plans to discuss ways to provide new services within the metaverse by utilizing Colorverse, which has secured technology and know-how. You can move to and access the 3D Metaverse directly from 2D services such as Kakao Talk, and we plan to allow you to experience major services on the mobile web without installing a separate app.
For example, it is expected to be possible to jointly produce a K-pop-themed metaverse world or a virtual space service using major story IPs. Additionally, you can watch your favorite singer’s performance in the metaverse or experience your favorite webtoon author’s work in a new way.
In addition, we can expect a new form of service in which users with similar interests naturally come together through community activities within the metaverse to create, distribute, and share UGC (User Generated Contents).
Meanwhile, Kakao calls its metaverse, which encompasses community services, ‘Kakao Universe’. We adopted a strategy of linking Kakao affiliated services with KakaoTalk, a well-known messenger in the global market, and Kakao CEO Nam Gung-hoon explained, “We plan to start the Metaverse service in areas where Kakao has strengths.” .
