Kakao signed a business agreement with Jeju Special Self-Governing Province to guarantee the mobility rights of the transportation vulnerable. We plan to work together to increase accessibility to digital services so that visitors to Jeju Island, Korea’s representative tourist destination, can travel safely.
On the 7th, a business agreement ceremony was held at Kakao’s Pangyo office building in Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do, with Kakao representative Hong Eun-taek and Jeju Island Governor Oh Young-hoon in attendance. The two sides agreed to cooperate in upgrading mobility guidance services for the transportation vulnerable and increasing service accessibility. The goal is to build movement guidance data for the transportation vulnerable within the year and open related services at the end of next year.
Jeju Island provides data necessary for service advancement, such as barrier-free tourism data for ‘Wheel Navigation Road’, and supports content for the transportation vulnerable. Wheel Navigil is the first service in Korea that Jeju Island launched last month. It is a navigation system for wheelchairs that provides directions and places that wheelchairs can travel through a satellite reception terminal installed on the wheelchair in which the traveler rides.
Based on the data, Kakao digitizes mobility support services for the transportation vulnerable and increases information accessibility. In addition, we plan to support service promotion by utilizing various resources such as Kakao Map and Kakao Talk.
Kakao and Jeju Island plan to continue cooperation to expand transportation convenience. The two sides began providing ultra-precise bus location information for the first time in Korea in 2019 as the first public-private cooperation project. With Kakao Map, real-time bus locations can be checked in seconds, making it a service that both residents and travelers are satisfied with. In particular, it is contributing greatly to bridging the information gap in outlying areas where bus information boards are not installed.
Hong Eun-taek, CEO of Kakao, said, “We plan to provide support in various ways so that Kakao’s services can help solve social problems,” and added, “We plan to strengthen public-private cooperation, including in Jeju Island, to introduce various services for the socially underprivileged.” .
Jeju Governor Oh Young-hoon said, “We hope to connect Jeju’s valuable data to private companies to create a successful model that solves local social problems and create a digital platform that can lead the global market.”
Meanwhile, Kakao plans to enhance its services to improve convenience for the transportation vulnerable, such as providing metropolitan subway level information on Kakao Map within the year.
