Samyang Corporation, a food and chemical affiliate of Samyang Group, held a ‘Functional Materials and Sugar Reduction Solution Seminar’ at the Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas Hotel, inviting about 150 people, including researchers from client companies and food company officials.
In this seminar, Samyang Corporation introduced Samyang’s specialty (highly functional) materials and global food market trends under the topics of ▲Why Prebiotics ▲Samyang Specialty Platform ▲Sugar Reduction Solution.
On this day, Samyang Corporation was the first to introduce the characteristics and use cases of prebiotic ingredients such as fructooligosaccharides and kestose. Prebiotics are low-molecular-weight fibers that are not broken down by digestive enzymes in the stomach and small intestine, and help with the growth of beneficial bacteria in the intestines.
Indigestible maltodextrin, produced by Samyang Corporation under the brand name Fiberist, is a functional ingredient that can help suppress the rise in blood sugar after a meal, improve neutral lipids in the blood, and facilitate bowel movements. It can be used in beverages, confectionery, bakery, fermented milk, etc. Fructooligosaccharide is a health functional food ingredient that can help proliferate beneficial bacteria in the intestines and facilitate bowel movements. It has a sweet taste similar to sugar and can be applied to dairy products, processed chocolate products, etc. Kestose is one of the main ingredients of fructo-oligosaccharides, and Samyang Corporation is conducting human application tests to have Kestose recognized as a health functional food ingredient.
Among these, indigestible maltodextrin and fructooligosaccharide are functional materials that can be reviewed for ‘functional labeling’ when added to general foods. The functional labeling system is a system that allows general foods to be labeled that the product contains ingredients known to help with specific functionality in accordance with the information notified by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
In addition to functional materials, Samyang Corporation also introduced ‘allulose’, an alternative sweetener that can help reduce sugar. Allulose is an ingredient found in figs and grapes, and has a sweet taste similar to sugar, but has zero calories, so it is called the optimal next-generation sweetener. In particular, the seminar provided a sugar reduction solution based on allulose use cases along with the sugar reduction trend of reducing sugar content in various food groups.
Samyang Corporation is focusing on promoting specialty materials to lead the expansion of functional materials and reduction of sugar content. To this end, Samyang Corporation participated in ‘HI (Health Ingredients) KOREA 2022’, an exhibition of health functional raw materials and products held at COEX in Seoul from September 28 to 30 and exhibited allulose and functional materials. In addition, the company plans to target the global market by participating in the Tokyo Health Food Ingredients Expo in Japan and the U.S. Food Ingredients Expo in October and November.
