On the 24th, Institut Pasteur Korea signed an ‘Agreement on the Operation of a Talent Training Program in the Biotechnology Field’ in the mayor’s office on the 4th floor of Seongnam City Hall, with Institut Pasteur Korea Director Ji Young-mi and Seongnam Mayor Shin Sang-jin in attendance.
According to the agreement, Institut Pasteur Korea operates a career experience program for local middle and high school students and a bio internship program for college students.
The career experience program for middle and high school students will be held from March to December next year for a total of 250 students. A one-day lab experience program is always available to provide tours of cutting-edge research facilities and conversations with scientists.
Additionally, a bio experience program is provided for middle school students. It will be operated by selecting 15 students each in the first and second semesters of next year and supporting 4 to 5 courses of lectures and experiments in the field of life sciences.
Meanwhile, the university student bio internship program is open to 20 first- to fourth-year university students who have lived in Seongnam City for more than one year. The method is to learn practical skills by participating in new drug development and infectious disease research programs at Institut Pasteur Korea during the summer vacation period (June-August) next year and the winter vacation period (December-February) in 2024.
Seongnam City will provide 104 million won in support for the cost of career experience for middle and high school students and the operation of a bio program for college students.
Ji Young-mi, director of Institut Pasteur Korea, said, “We are pleased to establish close cooperation with Seongnam City for the common goal of nurturing talent in the biotechnology field,” and added, “As Seongnam City’s representative global research institute, we will differentiate ourselves by utilizing infectious disease research capabilities, advanced technology, and multinational human resources.” “We will contribute to nurturing future talent who will lead the bio and health fields by providing advanced education and training programs,” he said.
Seongnam Mayor Shin Sang-jin said, “In order to lay the foundation for creating Seongnam as a special city for the 4th industrial revolution and to achieve sustainable growth, it is important to nurture talent that is the foundation of the biohealth industry.” He added, “It is meaningful to work with Institut Pasteur Korea, a world-class research institute.” He said.
Meanwhile, Institut Pasteur Korea is a non-profit research institute focusing on infectious disease research and was established in 2004 through Korea-France science and technology cooperation. Researchers from 11 countries are focusing on developing new treatments and researching prevention strategies for public health around the world. In addition, as the representative research institute in the Asia-Pacific region of the Pasteur Network, which consists of 33 research institutes in 25 countries, it is leading extensive international cooperation.
It was designated as a University of Science and Technology (UST) campus in 2014 for the first time as a private research institute rather than a government-funded research institute, and also operates master’s, doctoral, and integrated master’s and doctoral courses in bio-medical convergence.
