SK D&D has begun commercial operation of ‘Eumseong Eco Park’, a hydrogen fuel cell power plant.
Eumseong Eco Park, located in the Geumwang Industrial Complex in Eumseong-gun, North Chungcheong Province, is a high-efficiency hydrogen fuel cell power plant with a facility capacity of 20MW and an annual power generation of 165GWh, supplying electricity that can be used by 45,000 four-person households in the North Chungcheong region. Eumseong Eco Park will be operated by a special purpose company (SPC) jointly invested by Korea Western Power Company and financial investors, and city gas will be supplied by Chungcheong Energy Service.
SK D&D has been promoting the construction of Eumseong Eco Park on a site of approximately 7,270㎡ (2,200 pyeong) with a total project cost of approximately 132 billion won. Construction began in February, and in April, a project financing (PF) agreement worth 110 billion won was signed, accelerating the hydrogen fuel cell power plant project.
As a result, SK D&D will now operate a hydrogen fuel cell power plant with a total capacity of 40MW in the Chungbuk region alone, following the commercial operation of Cheongju Eco Park (20MW) last year. The two power plants are expected to produce 330GWh of electricity annually, contributing greatly to the electricity independence of the North Chungcheong region.
SK D&D has 180MW of hydrogen fuel projects including Boeun (20MW), Chungju (40MW), and Daesowon (40MW) projects in the North Chungcheong region, as well as Chilgok (20MW), Paju (31MW), Yakmok (9MW), and Asan (20MW). We have secured the business license for a battery power plant and plan to pursue it sequentially.
Kim Hae-jung, head of SK D&D Energy Solutions Division, said, “Hydrogen fuel cells are a field that will play a key role in revitalizing the hydrogen economy and distributed power generation that the government is promoting,” and added, “Hydrogen will be used as part of ESG management, such as the production of green hydrogen in connection with renewable energy such as offshore wind power in the future. “We plan to diversify our fuel cell business model,” he said.
Meanwhile, SK D&D has solidified its position as a leading company in the field of new and renewable energy such as solar power, onshore wind power, and ESS. Furthermore, in order to pursue sustainable management and secure future growth engines, we are continuously expanding our business area as a comprehensive eco-friendly energy platform company, including power brokerage, hydrogen fuel cells, and offshore wind power.
In addition, on the 28th, SK D&D established a joint venture with Glenmont Partners, a British renewable energy investment company, to establish a financial platform and, as the first step, purchased solar power generation resources worth 160 billion won and established a power brokerage service. They said they plan to enter the business in earnest.
