[PANGYO ISSUE] ‘Metaverse Alliance’, a public-private cooperative next-generation platform forward base, launched in Pangyo

On the 18th, the Ministry of Science and ICT held a launch ceremony for the ‘Metaverse Alliance’ (hereinafter referred to as the Alliance), which was formed mainly by metaverse-related industries and associations.

Metaverse is a compound word of ‘universe’, meaning the real world, and ‘meta’, meaning virtual/abstract, and refers to a three-dimensional virtual world where the boundaries between reality and virtuality have disappeared. Users participate in the virtual world using avatars, and it is attracting attention as a more advanced concept with a higher participation rate than the existing simple virtual reality (VR).

Private sector participants in the alliance included Hyundai Motor Company, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, Naver Labs, Maxt, Vernect, Raontech, three mobile communication companies, three terrestrial broadcasting companies, EBS, MBN, Kakao Entertainment, CJ ENM, and Lotte World.

Related organizations and associations include △National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA) △Radio Advancement Association of Korea (RAPA) △Korea Virtual Augmented Reality Industry Association (KoVRA) △Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) △Institute for Information and Communications Technology Planning and Evaluation (IITP) △Korea Broadcasting Corporation Korea Communications Agency (KCA), Mobile Industry Association of Korea (MOIBA), and Software Policy Research Institute (SPRi) participated.

The Ministry of Science and ICT said, “As part of the ‘virtual convergence economy development strategy’ that is the basis of the metaverse policy, the Alliance is a system led by the private sector on a project basis and supported by the government to realize a digital new deal and lead the metaverse era. “It was formed,” he explained.

The Alliance consists of ▲ a forum to share Metaverse industry and technology trends ▲ a legal system advisory group to review ethical and cultural issues in the Metaverse market and overhaul the legal system ▲ a project group to discover and plan the Metaverse platform through collaboration between companies. It is operated separately.

The Ministry of Science and ICT will seek various support measures based on the results presented by the Alliance, and will especially focus on supporting the establishment of an open Metaverse platform to revitalize the Metaverse ecosystem.

To this end, together with the National IT Industry Promotion Agency, we plan to promote joint discovery and planning of metaverse projects between companies centered on the metaverse hub and support the growth of metaverse companies, content production and verification, and developer training.

Cho Kyung-sik, Second Vice Minister of Science and ICT, said, “Metaverse is not a space monopolized by one large company, but a space created by multiple companies and entities coexisting together,” and added, “The private-led Metaverse Alliance will be the focal point of cooperation.” reported.
