    Naver Corporation (CEO Han Seong-sook) and KAIST Graduate School of AI (Dean Jeong Song) signed an agreement on the 21st to advance research in the AI ​​field and secure global AI leadership. Key officials including Naver COO Choi In-hyuk, Clova CIC CEO Jeong Seok-geun, NAVER AI Lab Director Ha Jeong-woo, KAIST AI Graduate School Dean Jeong Song, Professor Jae-geol Joo, Professor Shin Jin-woo, Professor Choi Jae-sik, and Professor Hwang Seong-ju attended the site and promised large-scale research cooperation.

    Following close cooperation with Seoul National University for research in the ‘hyperscale’ AI field, Naver is also conducting tightly coupled research cooperation with the KAIST Graduate School of AI. Naver and KAIST AI Graduate School have established a joint research center in Naver called ‘KAIST-NAVER Hypercreative AI Center (joint center director: Professor Jae-geol Joo of KAIST AI Graduate School, and Ha Jeong-woo, director of NAVER AI Lab)’ We are embarking on joint research and development of new AI technology using AI. 

    AI helps anyone with a good story and creative idea to create high-quality multimedia content. To this end, about 100 AI researchers from Naver and KAIST will participate, and an investment worth tens of billions of won will be made over three years.

    In particular, the KAIST AI Graduate School is comprised of about 10 professors and dozens of researchers, including Professors Joo Jae-geol, Shin Jin-woo, Hwang Seong-ju, Yang Eun-ho, and Choi Jae-sik, who have recently shown remarkable achievements in the world’s top AI academic societies such as ICLR, NeurIPS, ICML, CVPR, and ACL. Researchers participate in ultra-creative AI research. Together with Naver researchers, they will actively communicate and conduct research in the same space through a joint research center.

    We plan to discuss how Naver’s hardware infrastructure and data, along with human resources, can be utilized in the joint research center. Naver possesses a vast amount of content data, including videos and webtoons, that can be used for research, and is also steadily improving its production technology to create high-quality content.

    Efforts are also being made to foster AI professional talent. Naver researchers will act as adjunct professors and guide classes and research for KAIST AI graduate students, and will also actively support KAIST AI graduate students’ internships at Naver and dispatch to industry-academia cooperation.

    Naver COO Choi In-hyuk said, “With this agreement, Naver and KAIST have presented an advanced industry-academia cooperation model, from the wide scope of cooperation ranging from AI technology research and talent training to the close cooperation method of establishing a joint research center.” He added, “Through this, we have presented an advanced industry-academia cooperation model.” In addition, we will strive to successfully conduct joint research on creative AI, which is known as a challenging and new technology, so that the research capabilities of Naver and KAIST can not only take a leap forward, but also contribute to improving domestic AI technology competitiveness.”

    Jeong Song, Dean of the KAIST AI Graduate School, said, “Through this new type of industry-academia cooperation model with Naver, we will produce research results that will surprise the world and help industries and companies leading the latest AI technology such as Google, Facebook, Stanford, and Berkeley University. “We will use this as a stepping stone to stand shoulder to shoulder with leading academic institutions,” he said.

    Meanwhile, Naver signed a business agreement with Seoul National University on the 10th for joint research in the large-scale AI field. On the 25th, Naver’s large-scale AI model will be unveiled for the first time through ‘NAVER AI NOW’. From Seoul National University to KAIST AI Graduate School, we have joined hands with major academic leaders in AI research to strengthen ultra-large-scale AI research and utilize this to pioneer more challenging technological fields such as ultra-creative AI, while also helping everyone Naver is taking leading steps to secure global AI leadership by presenting a new AI model that can be easily utilized.
