‘Celico (CEO Kim Jeong-seok)’, a startup developing a new micro electronic eye technology medical device for patients with blindness, announced on the 18th that it has decided to register a patent for the ‘sub-type artificial retina device, driving method and manufacturing method thereof’ that it applied for last year.

Celico is a company located in the Pangyo Startup Zone, established in 2017 by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups to revitalize the startup ecosystem and operated by the Korea Startup Agency and the Gyeonggi Creative Economy Innovation Center. We are developing an implantable artificial retina medical device that can restore vision by implanting a high-resolution stimulator into the optic cell layer damaged by eye disease.

The patented technology registered this time is a patent that determines the placement and size of stimulation electrodes and return electrodes, and is one of the most important technologies in realizing high resolution of electronic eyes.

Celico proposed a new electrode manufacturing method through this patent. This is expected to overcome the limitations of miniaturizing single electrode cells and increasing the number of pixels, realizing high resolution and solving the problem of image blur.

Dr. Yi-un Jang, Director of Cellico Research Institute, said, “Through this patented technology, we aim to develop the highest resolution microelectronic eye device that realizes high resolution, which is a limitation of commercial technology, and reduces the cost burden on patients by utilizing the semiconductor manufacturing process.” said.
