Hanwha Ocean will participate in the ’23rd International Shipbuilding and Offshore Industry Exhibition (KORMARINE 2023)’ held at BEXCO in Busan for four days from Tuesday, October 24th to Friday, October 27th, and exhibit world-class ships and marine products. A large number of facilities and defense-related technologies were showcased.

Hanwha Ocean introduced a total of three products. The ammonia fuel-propelled ammonia carrier (86,000 CBM class Ammonia Carrier), which is in the spotlight as a next-generation fuel, and the large offshore wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV, Wind Turbine Installation Vessel) capable of installing wind turbines, which are emerging as eco-friendly new and renewable energy, are developed using proprietary technology. It is the world’s highest performance diesel submarine (Jang Bogo-III Batch-II submarine) developed. These products were equipped with the latest technologies developed by Hanwha Ocean, attracting a lot of attention from booth visitors from the first day of the exhibition.

Ammonia fuel-propelled ammonia carriers are carbon-free ships that do not emit carbon, and are next-generation eco-friendly ships that can effectively respond to the ship greenhouse gas emissions regulations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Hanwha Ocean has already obtained certification for LNG carriers, container ships, and ultra-large crude oil carriers that can be propelled with ammonia from famous overseas shipping companies, and plans to commercialize them with its own technology by 2025.

In the marine sector, a large offshore wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV, Wind Turbine Installation Vessel) was introduced for the first time at this exhibition. It can carry and operate five large 15MW offshore wind power generators at once, and generators can be installed up to a depth of 65m. An official said, “Two large offshore wind power generator installation ships are currently under construction and are scheduled to be delivered in 2024 and 2025, respectively.”

In the defense industry, the 3,000-ton class Jang Bogo-III Batch-II submarine, known as the world’s most advanced diesel submarine, was introduced. It is a hybrid submarine that combines the air-independent propulsion system (AIP) developed by Hanwha Ocean and the lithium-ion battery of Hanwha Aerospace, and has the world’s longest submergence capability among diesel submarines. The company explained that it is receiving a lot of attention from navies around the world because it is equipped with vertical launch tubes.

A Hanwha Ocean official expressed his ambition, saying, “Based on this technological competitiveness, Hanwha Ocean will leap forward to become a ‘Global Ocean Solution Provider’ that will lead the paradigm shift in the future maritime industry.”
