Rolls-Royce participated in the ‘6th International Maritime Defense Industry Exhibition (MADEX 7)’ held at BEXCO Exhibition Center 9 in Busan from June 1 (Wed) to 13 (Fri) to strengthen future naval power. It demonstrates its power and propulsion system capabilities.

Rolls-Royce announced that it was selected for the Daegu-class FFX Batch II frigate project of the Republic of Korea Navy and is building its innovative, modern and simple hybrid propulsion system for a total of eight ships. Each vessel is powered by a single MT8 gas turbine and electric propulsion motors powered by four Rolls-Royce mtu 4V 12 M4000B diesel generators. It has also been selected for the Chungnam-class FFX Batch-III project with a similar system configuration.

In addition, Rolls-Royce will unveil the MT7 gas turbine, the latest gas turbine technology for ships, through this MADEX. The MT7 is derived from the successfully proven AE 22C-Liberty aero engine that powers the V-1107 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft.

The MT4.6, a compact engine that provides a maximum output of 7 MW, has excellent fuel economy and performance retention. This technology is suitable for LCAC (Landing Craft Air Cushion) or hovercraft that require extreme power density, and provides hovercraft designers and manufacturers with greater flexibility in terms of propulsion system layout. .

The MT7 has a common core structure with the AE family, enabling the benefits of leveraging existing stable manufacturing facilities and supply chains and follow-on support networks. In 2012, the MT7 was selected to power a new LCAC 100-class vessel as part of the US Navy’s Ship to Shore Connector (SSC) initiative, which will expand to a total of 73 vessels.

“We are very proud to support all domestic customers, including the Republic of Korea Navy, with Rolls-Royce’s leading ship propulsion technology,” said Lee Jong-yeol, vice president of Business Development and Future Programs for the Rolls-Royce Defense Business Unit and President of Rolls-Royce Korea. He said, “I hope that this MADEX will be an important opportunity to showcase Rolls-Royce’s new capabilities based on world-leading innovative technologies and build close relationships with key stakeholders.”
