Kang Byeong-chan, head of the Jeju Energy Corporation’s Regional Energy Research Center, spoke at the ’14rd Hydrogen Market Insights (H3 Market Insights/H2MI)’ domestic P2G empirical status session held at EXCO (CEO Lee Sang-gil) in Daegu on the 2th and announced ‘Jeju 3MW Green Hydrogen’. The ‘assignment’ was introduced.
Center Director Kang Byeong-chan said, “Jeju’s grid size is 100/1th of the nation’s, making it vulnerable to volatility, and transmission lines are congested, with demand concentrated in the north and power generation concentrated in the east and west. In addition, because the proportion of industrial loads is small and it is highly dependent on HVDC (high-voltage direct current transmission), it has the limitation of being vulnerable in the event of HVDC failure.”
Center Director Kang said, “While solar power has rapidly increased in the Jeju area since 2018, output restrictions have also been rapidly increasing since 2019. “Currently, complexes of more than 100 MW, mainly wind power generation, are under development, so the problem of output limitations is expected to continue to increase,” he added.
He proposed ways to minimize output limitations by: △Storing unused electrical energy, △Converting stored unused electrical energy to other energy, △Optimized energy management through integrated operation of new and renewable energy, and △Application of existing generator control technology, new and renewable energy generator control technology. Application △Transmission of power between Jeju and the mainland through voltage-type HVDC △Establishment of a plan to minimize power generation output constraints through improvement of the power market system was presented.
Center Director Kang said, “The project ‘Development and demonstration of hydrogen (600kg) and battery (2MWh) storage system technology using renewable energy-linked green hydrogen production technology’ hosted by Jeju Energy Corporation is currently in progress,” adding, “3MW-class water electrolysis system.” “In addition to design, construction, and verification, we aim to improve public acceptance through construction and verification of a 600kg green hydrogen and 2MWh battery storage system, and verification and operation of a green hydrogen production and storage system,” he said.
In addition, Center Director Kang said, “Starting in May, we plan to begin 5MW verification operation by receiving power from overseas and to operate Korea’s first green hydrogen charging station and 1 hydrogen buses.”
