Hyundai Steel participated in World Hydrogen Expo 2025 (WHE 2025), held at KINTEX from December 4 to December 7.

At the exhibition, Hyundai Steel presented a model of its electric arc furnace steel plant in the U.S. state of Louisiana, where it plans to begin full-scale commercial production in 2029, along with a mid- to long-term technology roadmap leading to hydrogen-based steelmaking.

Hyundai Steel displayed an aerial scale model that allowed visitors to grasp the overall layout at a glance, including the Direct Reduction Plant (DRP), which produces direct reduced iron (DRI), electric arc furnaces, hot-rolled and cold-rolled production lines, and surrounding infrastructure.

In addition, exhibition videos illustrated a phased transition process in which Hyundai Steel introduces a direct reduction process using natural gas as the reducing agent, gradually increases the proportion of hydrogen use, and ultimately realizes hydrogen-based steelmaking. According to the company, the presentation was designed to help visitors intuitively understand Hyundai Steel’s carbon reduction processes and the technical steps involved in their implementation.

Hyundai Steel also introduced future core process technologies under development, equipment roadmaps, and its mid- to long-term vision for achieving net-zero carbon emissions. By linking near-term technologies expected to be commercialized with longer-term technological directions, the company provided an immersive viewing experience that conveyed its comprehensive carbon-neutrality strategy.

A Hyundai Steel official said, “Through WHE 2025, we aimed to showcase Hyundai Steel’s future vision and technological capabilities on the global stage and demonstrate our role, as part of Hyundai Motor Group, in contributing to carbon neutrality strategies,” adding, “We are introducing the entire steelmaking value chain, from iron ore reduction to final steel plate production, to clearly communicate Hyundai Steel’s mid- to long-term vision and message to visitors.”

Meanwhile, the World Hydrogen Expo 2025 brings together hydrogen companies from around the world to present the latest technologies and trends and create opportunities for global collaboration. Starting this year, the Hydrogen International Conference and the hydrogen industry exhibition H2 MEET have been integrated into a single event that combines exhibitions and conferences. Covering the entire hydrogen value chain from production to storage, transportation, and utilization, the expo has established itself as a global hub for sharing innovative technologies and market strategies.
