Kakao Entertainment announced that Kakao Webtoon and Sandoll Cloud, Sandoll’s font platform, signed a business agreement to expand the font support business for creators.
In addition to the font support service that has been in progress for 9 years for creators who are concerned about font copyright issues, the company plans to pursue various projects such as KakaoTalk emoticon collaboration related to Sandol fonts.
With the intention of helping creators who have difficulty using fonts when serializing their works to continue their creative activities freely, Kakao Webtoon has been providing Sandol and SandolCloud font services to creators for free since Daum Webtoon in 2014. In fact, along with the rapid growth of the webtoon industry, the need to support various fonts essential for webtoon creation is increasing day by day.
To date, the cumulative number of writers who have written works using Sandol Cloud’s Sandol fonts has reached approximately 200, and approximately 170 writers are still continuing their creative activities using Sandol fonts. Previously, in 2016, Kakao Webtoon and Sandoll developed ‘Misaeng’, which preserves the individuality of Yoon Tae-ho’s handwriting, and distributed it free of charge to creators for free use in commercial/non-commercial activities, receiving a great response.
Through this business agreement, Kakao Webtoon writers can create webtoons using all Sandol fonts served on Sandol’s font platform Sandol Cloud. Kakao Webtoon and SandolCloud plan to continue to consider ways to support various fonts that will be helpful to creators.
The business agreement also included plans for KakaoTalk emoticon collaboration and the release of font-related products. KakaoTalk emoticon collaboration will be carried out by applying the Sandol font to Kakao Webtoon’s premium intellectual property rights (IP) that will launch emoticons in the future, and we plan to review works for future emoticon collaboration. In addition, Sandol fonts used by famous Kakao Webtoon writers will be selected and released separately as Sandol Cloud special products within this year.
An official from Kakao Entertainment said, “Just as the font support project with Sandoll has helped the creative activities of numerous webtoon creators over the past 9 years, this agreement will also proceed in a way that is beneficial to creators.” He added, “We will continue to expand globally in the future.” “We will consider various measures that will help the creative activities of future creators,” he said.
A Sandoll official said, “We are pleased that font support for creators is helping to produce high-quality creative works.” He added, “We are working with Sandoll Cloud to help creators use optimal fonts to increase the global competitiveness of K webtoons and expand the market size.” “We will also review ways to cooperate in overseas business, such as supporting our multilingual font services,” he said.
