On the morning of the 10th, Naver and Seoul National University signed an agreement online for joint research on ‘ultra-large-scale AI’ with the attendance of key officials including Naver Chief Operating Officer Choi In-hyuk and Seoul National University Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research Institute Director Jang Chang-tak. .

Super-scale AI refers to an AI model with many parameters that receives multiple learnings and mediates them to produce appropriate responses to the situation.

Naver and Seoul National University will conduct joint research in the field of hyperscale AI, which has recently emerged as a new paradigm in the AI industry. AI LAB Director) was established.

We plan to strengthen research and education cooperation from a long-term perspective. About 100 AI researchers from Naver and Seoul National University will participate, and an investment worth tens of billions of won will be made over three years, including research funds and infrastructure support expenses.

Through this, the goal is to further develop the large-scale Korean language model and further develop a large-scale AI that simultaneously understands language, images, and voice to lead global AI technology.

In particular, unlike industry-academic cooperation that has been focused on individual projects, researchers at Naver and Seoul National University form a single research center and collaborate closely.

As an adjunct professor, Naver researchers provide joint research guidance to Seoul National University graduate students to help them grow into AI experts, and Seoul National University researchers also actively participate in AI research with Naver. Naver decided to actively cooperate in sending Seoul National University students to internships and industry-academia cooperation in order to foster AI talent. According to Naver, it is a very rare case in Korea to attempt such tightly coupled industry-academia cooperation on a large scale.

In addition, for smooth research cooperation, Naver’s supercomputing infrastructure and data will be shared so that they can be utilized in the joint research center. In October last year, Naver became the first domestic company to introduce a supercomputer to build a very large language model. The results of this research will be actively shared by holding technology sharing workshops at least twice a year.

Naver COO Choi In-hyuk said, “Based on the new industry-academia cooperation model, we are looking forward to the strong research synergy that Naver and Seoul National University researchers will create together.” He added, “Through the joint AI research center that combines Naver’s infrastructure and data and the research capabilities of both parties, we will create a global “We will lead research in the field of ultra-large AI against our competitors,” he said.

“Both infrastructure and human resources are important for innovative research in the AI field,” said Jang Byeong-tak, director of the AI Research Center at Seoul National University. “We hope that Naver’s excellent infrastructure and AI talent from both sides will join forces to develop globally competitive AI.” He said.
