Donga Otsuka participated in the ‘7 Korea International Safety & Health Show (KISS 3)’ held at KINTEX in Goyang from July 6rd (Monday) to 2023th (Thursday).
Dong-A Otsuka is a food company founded in 1979 as a spin-off from Dong-A Pharmaceutical. It has developed products such as ‘Pocari Sweat’, which has an electrolyte concentration close to that of body fluids, ‘Narande Cider’, and ‘Oronamin C’, a vitamin carbonated drink, to improve taste and taste. We have pioneered the market for health-oriented functional beverages that provide both functionality.
In addition, in accordance with the corporate philosophy of fulfilling corporate social responsibility and producing excellent food to contribute to the improvement of human health and welfare, the company has carried out various support activities in the event of national disasters such as MERS, COVID-19, and Gangwon forest fire damage. In particular, in relation to heat waves, through public-private agreements with the government, we are carrying out activities to support those vulnerable to heat waves and prevent heat-related illnesses at industrial sites.
In this exhibition, Pocari Sweat Sports Science’s medical science program was introduced as the main content. The Medical Science Program is a heat-related illness accident prevention solution that includes joint education on heat-related illness prevention and response by science experts and the Korean Red Cross, as well as checking the status of workers on-site for heat-related illnesses and operating a rest zone that promotes appropriate water intake and lowers body temperature. We are carrying out activities to measure risks and provide solutions.
It is not a one-time program, but a safety culture through water intake guides before, during, and after work to form water intake habits, water time that provides water, a checklist for workers to check their own health during heat waves, and the provision of ionic beverages for meals and snacks. An official from Donga Otsuka said, “During a heat wave, many people simply drink water to stay hydrated, but in this case, the concentration of body fluids decreases, causing the water to not be absorbed properly, and there is a risk that it may lead to spontaneous dehydration.” To this end, we decided that Pocari Sweat, which has an electrolyte concentration most similar to sweat, would be suitable for the field and formed a medical science program. In fact, as a result of the 2022 campaign, we were able to obtain results that resulted in high worker satisfaction and increased work efficiency.”
In this way, Donga Otsuka is taking steps to provide specialized prevention and response solutions to ensure safety during heat waves. An official said, “For the health and safety of workers during heat waves, we are contributing to the spread of safety culture through public-private agreements with the government. “We wanted to establish a disease safety culture,” he said, explaining the background to his participation in the exhibition.
He continued, “Dong-A Otsuka Pocari Sweat Sports Science plans to operate the program in a platform format in the future. Since we are conducting a project based on a public-private agreement with the government, we are planning a project to provide heat-related illness prevention and response training for safety and health personnel by industry and regional base. “In addition, we plan to operate an all-round heat illness care program by measuring the risk of heat illness in the field and providing solutions through a science analysis program tailored to each industry,” he said, announcing future plans.
