Korea Register (CEO Hyeong-cheol Lee) announced that it will participate in the 6th International Maritime and Defense Industry Exhibition (MADEX 7), which will be held at BEXCO Exhibition Hall 9 in Busan from Wednesday, June 1 to Friday, June 13.
Established in 1960, the Korean Register is a world-leading comprehensive technology supporter in the shipbuilding and maritime fields that protects life, property, and the environment in accordance with classification rules and international conventions. Korea Register, which became a full member of the International Association of Classification Associations (IACS) in 1988, is currently providing the best service to customers around the world from its headquarters in Busan as well as domestic and overseas branches and offices. Currently, it is a government agency inspection agency in 79 countries around the world and has long experience as a statutory inspection agency for private ships.
The main service that Korea Register will introduce at MADEX 2023 is the ship safety assurance program, which is a total life cycle inspection model for Korean-type ships. The total life cycle of a ship is classified into four stages: design, construction, operation, and retirement, and essential inspection services are proposed to ensure the safety of the ship at each stage.
All inspection services provided by the Korean Register are performed focusing on the development function of standards/rules, etc. to ensure consistency and continuity. At the acquisition stage of a ship, problems before construction can be identified in advance through drawing approval and failure mode impact analysis provided by the Korea Register of Shipping, and at the construction stage, on-site inspection services can be provided not only for the ship but also for the payload. The acquisition quality of ships is continuously evaluated for safety assurance effectiveness through regular inspections even during the operation and maintenance phase, and necessary maintenance requirements can be identified in advance. In connection with the ship’s condition assessment service, services such as technical advice are provided to enable the decommissioning process for ships that are below grade.
It is characterized by a virtuous cycle structure in which technical issues and new technology developments for ships that arise during a series of total life cycles are fed back into standards/rules, etc., and all applicable inspection services can be provided by the Korea Register of Shipping. This is considered to be the biggest advantage.

In addition, since 2023, we have been participating in international standardization activities for internationally credible ship safety certification through membership activities in the International Naval Safety Association (INSA), and are playing a leading role in securing international certification technology essential for K-defense exports. It was also emphasized that .
An official from the Korean Register said, “As the name suggests, the Korean Register is an inspection organization that determines the class of ships. The first classification began in 1760 with the British Classification Society, and the services required for classification inspection have been established for more than 260 years. A ship is a type of ship, and the inspection required to ensure the minimum safety capability (seaworthiness) of the ship is carried out. should be performed, but considering the special mission assigned, it enjoyed an exemption from application to inspection of related ships. However, recently, the need to apply requirements for safety and prevention of environmental pollution has emerged for ships as well, leading to the proposal of a total life cycle inspection model based on the classification society’s existing inspection framework for ships as well,” he explained.
He continued, “There are about 109 classification societies around the world, but there are a total of 11 regular members of the International Classification Society (IACS), making the Korea Register the 7th largest classification society in the world. “Our global market share is so high that 90% of the world’s marine vessels are registered/managed by IACS member shipping companies,” he said. “Korea Register of Shipping has been providing one-stop service in the ship field since 2000, and to date, the naval business has sold 3,000 ships.” It has participated in new construction projects such as the Jang Bogo-III class submarine construction project, a ton-class submarine, the Ulsan class Batch-II frigate project, and the surface ship rescue ship and submarine rescue ship project. “The export vessels participated in the Thai frigate export project, Indonesian submarine export project, Indonesian coast guard boat export project, and Peruvian coast guard boat export project,” he said, announcing the achievements so far.
Future plans were also revealed. An official said, “Based on the Korea Register of Shipping’s ship safety assurance program, we plan to continue to provide full life cycle inspection services for ships, and in connection with the activities of the International Ship Safety Association, we plan to release a classification code that can be applied to export ships. “He said.
