Starting with the acquisition of Saehan Paper in 1965, Hansol Paper built a foundation as a comprehensive paper company through the construction of the Janghangjang factory in 1992, the Cheonan factory in 1993, the Daejeon factory in 1995, and the acquisition of the Shintanjin factory in 2009. In 1991, it became independent from the Samsung Group and established the Hansol Group. In 2013, it established a thermal paper swing production system at the Janghangjang and Shintanjin factories to establish itself as a comprehensive paper company that leads to ‘printing paper – industrial paper – special paper – thermal paper’.
Currently, it aims to become a ‘global eco-friendly material company that provides new value to customers with the best technology’ beyond the traditional paper business. In particular, it is actively investing in the food packaging field based on paper material, which is evaluated as one of the promising alternatives to plastic. In 2021, it invested in a gravure coater in the Cheonan plant to expand the portfolio of Protego, an eco-friendly flexible packaging material. becoming a business.
At this exhibition, Hansol Paper introduced eco-friendly products such as Protego and Terravas, which are food-related packaging materials that have high eco-friendliness in the carbon-neutral and plastic-free era, but apply new technologies that were difficult to implement in existing paper materials. In particular, new products such as paper sealing trays, which were selected as excellent products in the SEOUL FOOD AWARDS 2023 food tech sector, were also introduced, promoting the excellence of Hansol Paper in the food tech field.
Paper sealing tray is a packaging container dedicated to MAP (Modified Atmospheres Packaging) that secures barrier and sealing properties. It is characterized by its high versatility because it can be applied without replacing the existing plastic packaging equipment. In particular, officials explain that it is optimized for MAP packaging and can reduce plastic usage by 85%, so it meets consumer needs for plastic removal. It is also possible to provide customized printing services for each customer by using paper materials, and it is also an advantage that various papers can be selected according to packaging products.
In addition, Terravas, which was introduced together, is a paper container applied with a water-soluble coating solution developed by Hansol Paper instead of the existing plastic-based PE (polyethylene) coating. Separate discharge of paper is possible, and it can be used for various purposes such as containers, cups, and straws due to its excellent water resistance and heat resistance. In addition, Protego, one of the eco-friendly products, can replace plastic and aluminum flexible packaging materials used in various fields such as food, medicine, cosmetics, and household goods. It is characterized by increasing preservation of contents and enabling recycling through separate discharge of paper.

Lotte Well Food’s Zero Jelly and Zero Choco Ball, Yuhan-Kimberly’s Kleenex quarantine mask, Muji’s snacks and tea-type products, and Denps’ Truvitamin have been released as major products using Protego, an eco-friendly flexible packaging material. Here, Terravas, an eco-friendly lightweight packaging material released in 2021, is showing steady growth while being recognized for its technology and potential, such as signing business agreements with large food companies such as Samsung Welstory and Shinsegae Food, Hansol Paper said. The packaging material is applied to Samsung Welstory’s sandwich containers, Paul Bassett’s piece cake and egg tart containers, and Starbucks’ paper straws.
In order to respond to the diverse needs of customers, Hansol Paper is expanding its lineup with low-barrier products in addition to the existing high-barrier products in the case of Protego. The low-blocking Protego product plans to be released within the year after testing by the customer. In the case of paper sealing trays, they are currently commercialized in the overseas market, and Hansol Paper is promoting development to supply them to the domestic market through partnerships with overseas companies. We are currently conducting product R&D through the combination of various paper materials and films, and we expect that we will be able to create tangible results in the near future.
