Hyundai Motor Group participated in ‘H2 MEET 2024’ at KINTEX, Goyang, from September 25 (Wednesday) to 27 (Friday). The event showcased various hydrogen technologies applied across the entire lifecycle, from production to utilization.
H2 MEET, now in its fifth year, is Korea’s largest specialized hydrogen industry exhibition. It is a platform for exchanging the latest hydrogen technologies and fostering collaboration through exhibitions, forums, and conferences. This year, the event is held under the theme ‘Be a First Mover in Hydrogen,’ with around 230 companies participating.
Since announcing the expansion of its hydrogen value chain business brand, ‘HTWO,’ earlier this year at CES, Hyundai Motor Group is participating in H2 MEET 2024 for the first time. The group presents its hydrogen technology and applications through scenario booths centered on four themes: Energy Security, Decarbonization of Ports and Airports, Industrial Hydrogen Applications, and Business Hydrogen Society.
The <Energy Security> booth showcases circular resource technologies for hydrogen production, including methods like Waste-to-Hydrogen (W2H) using biogas from organic waste (such as food and livestock manure) and Plastic-to-Hydrogen (P2H) through plastic decomposition. The booth also highlights Hyundai’s Korean hydrogen production technology, including Korea’s first W2H facility, the Chungju Resource Circulation Hydrogen Production Facility, which has been operational since 2016.
Additionally, the exhibition features PEM (Polymer Electrolyte Membrane) electrolysis technology, which is ideal for high-purity hydrogen production. It details Hyundai E&C’s ongoing project to construct Korea’s first electrolysis-based hydrogen production facility in Buan, Jeollabuk-do.
The <Decarbonization> booth introduced hydrogen solutions that can be applied to high-emission industrial facilities like ports and airports.
Specifically, the booth features the ‘NorCAL ZERO’ project, launched in May, aiming to decarbonize ports in North America by introducing eco-friendly trucks. It also highlights the digital transformation and future mobility innovation agreement with Incheon International Airport, showcasing efforts to reduce carbon emissions in port and airport operations worldwide.
In the <Industrial Hydrogen Applications and Business> booth, Hyundai Motor Group presented various hydrogen-based green applications across industries.
Through its joint venture HTWO Logistics, established with Hyundai Glovis America, the company demonstrates the eco-friendly logistics system implemented at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) in Georgia using the XCIENT Fuel Cell truck. The exhibit details the group’s plan to transition logistics systems from conventional internal combustion trucks to hydrogen trucks.
The booth also features other hydrogen-focused green initiatives, such as Hyundai Steel’s green steel business and hydrogen power generation systems suitable for various industrial clusters.
The final booth, <Hydrogen Society>, offered a vision of how hydrogen will transform industry and daily life.
The booth showcases Hyundai’s hydrogen fuel cell systems, which are applied across various mobility and industrial sectors, including ships, trams, forklifts, generators, and heavy equipment. Attendees can also experience Hyundai Rotem’s hydrogen-electric tram through a VR simulation set up in the exhibition space.
Additionally, a large diorama illustrating the entire hydrogen lifecycle highlights Hyundai Motor Group’s vision of a hydrogen society as an ‘Energy Mobilizer.’
Hyundai Motor Group plans to strengthen its collaboration framework with its affiliates to secure leadership in the hydrogen ecosystem. The company will continue developing resource-circulating hydrogen production technologies, expanding its commercial vehicle lineup and hydrogen business base.
To this end, Hyundai Motor Group aims to network with governments, local governments, and various hydrogen-related companies participating in H2 MEET 2024, expanding new demand channels for hydrogen-based mobility solutions.
A Hyundai Motor Group representative stated, “Through this event, we aim to showcase the group’s hydrogen technology capabilities and projects spanning the entire lifecycle of hydrogen production and utilization,” adding, “We will propose various HTWO Grid solutions to accelerate the transition to a hydrogen society and lead the hydrogen industry.”
H2 MEET is a specialized hydrogen industry exhibition for Korean and international companies and institutions involved in hydrogen production, storage, transportation, and utilization. From this year, H2 MEET aims to become a professional event that will enhance participation from global hydrogen industry companies, generate tangible results, and contribute to understanding South Korea’s hydrogen economy ecosystem. Starting this year, it will be held in conjunction with H2WORLD and concurrently with the K-BATTERY SHOW 2024 and HARFKO (Heating Air Conditioning Refrigeration and Fluid Exhibition—Korea) 2024 at KINTEX 1.
