The Pangyo autonomous vehicle pilot operation district will be expanded from the existing route type to a zone type where boarding points and destinations can be freely set. Accordingly, various autonomous driving-based transportation services such as unmanned shuttles and robot taxis are expected to become active.

According to Gyeonggi Province on the 28th, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced the expansion of the ‘Pangyo autonomous vehicle pilot operation zone’ on the 24th. The pilot operation district is a newly introduced system under the Self-Driving Vehicle Act, which came into effect in May 2020, and is a special regulatory district to support the verification of autonomous driving services.

The Pangyo self-driving car pilot operation district is based on paid passenger transportation companies and user demand, and is expanding from the existing 7km (Pangyo Station to Gyeonggi Business Growth Center) route to 1.34㎢ from the 1st Techno Valley to the 2nd Valley (Pangyo 1TV 1.16㎢, 2TV 0.18㎢). ㎢) and the connecting section is expanded to 0.53 km.

The zone type differs from the existing route type, which only operates within a set section, in that operators who wish to provide self-driving car services within a designated area can freely decide on the route or utilization plan.

If businesses in the autonomous driving-based transportation and logistics service fields, such as unmanned shuttles and robot taxis, decide on routes or utilization plans within the zone and apply for business, Gyeonggi Province can issue a limited license for them.

The province expects that with this expansion of the pilot operation district area, various autonomous driving services such as autonomous cooperative driving buses, unmanned shuttles, and robot taxis will be implemented in Pangyo Techno Valley, creating business synergy effects.

Gyeonggi-do Future Growth Policy Director Kim Gyu-sik said, “Gyeonggi-do launched the Gyeonggi-do Autonomous Driving Center in May 2019 and has been leading the autonomous vehicle pilot operation district by providing an open platform that can demonstrate autonomous vehicles based on actual roads.” He added, “This pilot “We expect that the expansion of the operating area will have a positive effect on the expansion of business models of various companies, including technological development and service expansion of companies developing autonomous driving technology.”
