NHN announced that its global webtoon platform ‘Pocket Comics’ has successfully settled in the French market, the outpost for its expansion into Europe.
According to mobile data and analysis platform data.ai (formerly App Annie), NHN Comico’s ‘Pocket Comics’ has ranked first in sales for the past 10 consecutive days among webtoon services in the book category of the French App Store. This is interpreted as proving service competitiveness in France, where the comics industry has deep roots.
Pocket Comics, which was first introduced in France last January, is actively targeting French female consumers in their 20s and 30s who spend a lot of money on webtoons, and is showing rapid growth, setting new sales records every month. The fact that the sales ranking is high compared to the ranking of monthly active users is also evidence that there are many customers who are loyal to the service.
Analysis suggests that this achievement was largely due to the fact that Pocket Comics focused on targeting French female consumers through the ‘romance fantasy’ genre. In particular, the French versions of ‘My Second Husband Is Depressed’ and ‘Nulitas’, traditional romance novels set in the medieval era, were released in French, leading to a positive sales effect.
In addition to France, Pocket Comics is accelerating its efforts to penetrate the European market by launching a German language service in April this year. The plan is to expand global bases in Asia, especially Japan and Thailand, as well as North America and Europe, and become the ‘global No. 1 female-oriented webtoon platform’ focusing on romantic fantasy.
Kim Il-kyung, director of NHN Comico Business Division, said, “Due to the characteristics of French culture that places importance on details such as colorful backgrounds and costumes, Korean webtoons’ unique detailed drawings, rapid development, and hooking points at the end of each episode served as popular elements.” He added, “As a romantic fantasy genre, “We will present a variety of works so that the incoming users can expand into other genres such as BL and modern romance,” he said.
