Naver Labs, together with the National Museum of Korea, is conducting a beta test of the National Museum of Korea’s AR navigation service for a digital twin-based augmented reality (AR) viewing experience.
The beta test will be held twice, from November 14th to November 25th and from December May to December 16th, and visitors who wish to experience AR navigation can apply through the National Museum of Korea website.
The National Museum of Korea’s AR navigation, like Naver 1784, is an example of the implementation of ‘ARCVERSE’, a digital twin-based technology-based convergence ecosystem that Naver Labs is advancing. The difference is that at 1784, robots using 5G and the cloud help employees with their work, while at the National Museum of Korea, precise indoor positioning technology and AR functions are used to help visitors have a vivid viewing experience.
Visitors are expected to be able to view the museum naturally and without interruption, from mapping to positioning, tracking, rendering, and object recognition. First, precise indoor positioning, which was difficult with existing GPS alone, has become possible, allowing users to conveniently search for their location within the museum and the corresponding viewing route.
In addition, by viewing certain exhibits, such as the comb-patterned pottery Jinheungwangsunsubibi from Bukhansan, on a smartphone, the details of the relics and the environment at the time of discovery can be realized in augmented reality, allowing for a more unique experience. Some spaces during the Three Kingdoms period and Joseon Dynasty also offer an AR tour mode. It is possible to have a vivid experience as if you were actually in a past era or at a site where ruins or relics were located, rather than a museum.
Seok Sang-ok, CEO of Naver Labs, said, “Through Naver Labs’ advanced technology, we expect visitors to experience the museum in a more vivid and valuable way without time and space constraints.” He added, “ARC eye, which will soon be introduced through the Naver Cloud Platform, will be launched with various global partners. “As there is a need from people, we will expand cooperation with partners in various fields, starting with the National Museum of Korea.”
Meanwhile, Naver Labs and the National Museum of Korea plan to continue various collaborations starting with this beta test.
