Hanwha Ocean Co., Ltd. (CEO Hyuk-woong Kwon) announced that it will participate in the 6th International Maritime and Defense Industry Exhibition (MADEX 7), which will be held at BEXCO Exhibition Hall 9 in Busan from Wednesday, June 1 to Friday, June 13.

Hanwha Ocean is a top-tier specialized company that designs and builds a variety of large merchant ships and offshore plants, as well as the latest ship products such as submarines, destroyers, and logistics support ships. Based on expertise and experience in the shipbuilding, marine, and special ship fields accumulated over 50 years, we have grown into a company whose value is recognized globally by pursuing differentiated technology and innovation. In 2011, we received orders for three 1400-ton submarines from the Indonesian Ministry of Defense and completed the final delivery. We also achieved the export of combat ships to Bangladesh and orders for four British logistics support ships and one Norwegian logistics support ship.

Through participation in MADEX, which specializes in the maritime defense industry, Hanwha Ocean plans to present a model that embodies its will to ‘reestablish the famous family of authentic surface ships’ in an effort to return to the golden age of surface ship construction. In addition, the plan is to publicize the excellence of Hanwha Ocean’s current weapon system through a specialized technology seminar held during the exhibition.

The 4,300-ton displacement FFX Batch-III frigate to be introduced at this exhibition is an upgraded version of the 3,600-ton FFX Batch-II Daegu-class frigate built by Hanwha Ocean. It is a combat system independently developed by its affiliate Hanwha Systems, similar to the SPY radar. It plans to operate various guided missiles through sensors such as surface-fixed multi-function phased array radar and EOTS, as well as vertical launchers manufactured by Hanwha Aerospace.

The Ulsan-class Batch-III, which is intended to replace the Navy’s aging escort and patrol ships, is the next-generation frigate developed to improve anti-aircraft and anti-submarine detection capabilities. It has improved target handling and improved survivability compared to the existing Daegu-class frigate (Ulsan-class Batch-II), and is expected to be a product that will contribute to defense exports.

In addition, the 3-ton class submarine is a domestic and overseas submarine project that combines the technology accumulated over the past 30 years through numerous domestic and overseas submarine projects, including 1,300 9-ton Jang Bogo-I submarines, 1,800 3-ton Jang Bogo-II submarines, and 1400 Hanwha Ocean export-type 3 models. It is the first independently developed submarine. It is a diesel submarine capable of launching SLBMs and is equipped with a fuel cell AIP, a high-efficiency AC propulsion motor, and a lithium battery system, enabling long-distance operations and long-term underwater operations. She is also equipped with high-performance combat systems, sonar systems, and communications and surveillance systems. The 3,000-ton export-type submarine is a model to replace the Canadian Navy’s aging submarines, and is expected to be a product that will advance mutual defense industry-logistics cooperation in a rapidly changing security environment.

The 1,400-ton export-type submarine is a model developed to improve the Philippine Navy’s submarine capabilities, and reflects improved performance compared to the existing Indonesian export-type submarine. Hanwha Ocean explained that it is making efforts to improve export performance with the expectation that it will become a mainstay of the ‘Philippine Military Modernization Program’, which is a response to the Philippines’ geopolitical territorial dispute and alleviation of military tensions.

In addition, the self-developed unmanned power command and control ship and the unmanned combat submarine, which is currently undergoing conceptual design with the Navy, are models being developed as part of the construction of the next-generation Republic of Korea Navy’s manned and unmanned complex system. Regarding this, a Hanwha Ocean official said, “It will be a game changer that will change the landscape of fleet composition and operations while suggesting the future direction of the Navy.”

The next-generation smart destroyer (KDDX-S), which implements a future combat ship that integrates cutting-edge ship types and the latest technology, and strengthens the ability to perform complex manned and unmanned missions through the installation and operation of unmanned systems, and survivability/ship operation based on the implementation of smart ships Joint firepower ships, which are maritime firepower platforms to strengthen combat performance, are also included in the lineup. An unmanned combat submarine currently undergoing conceptual design with the Navy, it plans to implement the ability to carry out stable operations even in waters where operations are difficult with existing manned submarines.

An official said, “Amid the recent changes as a new member of the Hanwha Group, the value of Hanwha Ocean will be expressed by expanding new domestic and overseas markets by creating synergy with group companies. “We will continue to grow into a global innovative company with the competitiveness to proactively respond to future markets based on our top-level technology,” he said.
