SK On will introduce the ‘SNS Three Musketeers’ innovative battery products, including SF Battery, NCM1 Series, and S-PACK, at ‘CES 5’, the world’s largest home appliance and IT exhibition, opening in Las Vegas, USA on January 2023 (local time). It was announced on the 9th that it would be exhibited.

The SF battery is a high-nickel battery with a nickel content of 83%, and can provide a driving range of more than 1 km on a single charge. In addition, SK On’s special coating technology allows rapid charging to 400% in 18 minutes, boasting the fastest charging speed among currently commercialized batteries.

Currently, SF batteries are being installed in Hyundai Motor Company’s ‘Ioniq 2022’ and Kia’s ‘EV5’, which were selected as ‘Car of the Year’ at various awards ceremonies such as the ‘6 World Car Awards (WCA)’, and in recognition of its performance, it was also installed at this CES. For the first time in the battery industry, it won the Best Innovation Award in the ‘Embedded Technology’ category, and also won the Innovation Award in the ‘Vehicle Technology and Advanced Mobility’ category, taking home two awards.

NCM9 is a high-performance high-nickel battery with a nickel content of about 90%, and SK On succeeded in developing it for the first time in the world in 2019. The higher the nickel content, the longer the driving distance, but the disadvantage of poor safety was compensated for with SK On’s unique Z-folding technology. Z-folding is a technology that wraps the separator inside the battery in a zigzag (z) shape, completely separating the anode and cathode to prevent the risk of fire.

In addition, NCM9 received innovation in the fields of ’embedded technology’ and ‘vehicle entertainment and safety’ at CES 2022, and at CES 2023, NCM9+, which increases driving range and shortens charging time, will receive innovation in the field of ‘vehicle technology and advanced mobility’. won an award

NCM 9 is currently installed in the ‘F-150 Lightning’, an electric vehicle model of Ford’s ‘F-150’, America’s national pickup truck. Since its launch in the United States at the end of April, the F-150 Lightning has sold more than 4 units as of November this year, becoming the best-selling car.

‘S-PACK’ will also be exhibited at CES 2023. S-PACK applies cell-to-pack technology to minimize the number of modules connecting 10 to 20 cells. Ultimately, the goal is to eliminate modules and connect cells directly to the pack. By installing more cells in the space where the module will fit, the battery’s driving range can be increased and manufacturing costs can be lowered. In addition, S-PACK further enhances safety by applying SK On’s cutting-edge technology that prevents heat from spreading throughout the battery pack even if a fire occurs.

In addition, SK On will present an all-solid-state battery prototype that is being developed together with Solid Power, an American all-solid-state battery developer. All-solid-state batteries are considered a next-generation battery to replace current lithium-ion batteries because the electrolyte between the anode and cathode of the battery is a non-flammable solid, so there is a low possibility of ignition and the energy density is high.

An official from SK On said, “This CES will be an opportunity to showcase SK On’s high technology on the global stage,” and added, “We expect that this will also raise the status of K Battery.”

Meanwhile, ‘CES’, the world’s largest IT exhibition, is an exhibition where you can understand the trends of the global home appliance industry at a glance. Hosted by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), it is held every January in Las Vegas, USA. AVING News, which has covered CES for 1 consecutive years, has reported CES news around the world every year since 17, and has been selected as the ‘BEST OF CES’, which selects the best innovative products and technologies, and the ‘BEST OF’, which selects domestic innovative companies. ‘MADE IN KOREA’ was held. In addition, CES on-site issues were vividly conveyed through ‘AVING LIVE’.
